As Radharc
(out of sight) as Gaeilge
'As Radharc' explores the protection of Irish folklore, spirituality, and the home. The idea is influenced by the rural myth that seven elements protect you from mischievous fairies. My interior prints have incorporated these features of protection which aim to encompass the home as a safe sacred place through upholstery, window treatments and wallpaper design.
My practice varies from screen print, digital print, flock, felting, embellishment and embroidery, creating multi-dimensional surfaces. The unique use of embellishment presents a handcrafted effect using Ireland’s natural resource of Irish linen and the re-use of Galway wool through embellished textures. My aesthetic fuses the simplicity and complexity of the organic world, examining the Irish landscape with a focus on circular growths of fairy forts, lichen and moss. The act of storytelling is tangible within my design with hand-drawn and photographic elements reflecting the stories of Ireland and responding through mixed-media approaches.
