Intrigued by human behaviours over the course of the Coronavirus lockdown, ‘Pookie’ (Gaelic slang for mushroom and faerie), explores the idea of escapism on a physical and psychological level. Festering mushrooms act as a metaphor for escapism as it plays on the theory of natural hallucinogenics.

With sportswear elements apparent across the collection, ‘Pookie’ comments on how our relationship with formal clothing has changed as a result of the pandemic. The garments featuring gold links and macrame knotting techniques, is representative of connections made within the brain while under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs.

My studio practice is largely involved in fabric manipulation and surface texture development. Working directly with the materials is paramount to my practice. Creating a one-on-one relationship with the materials I use, mirrors my intense need to connect physically with the world around me.

The ‘Pookie’ collection get progressively more abstract and delicate as it develops, further representing the brain in its altered state as well as the progression of people’s mental state over the course of the pandemic.
