My textile artwork explores the theme of the hormonal contraceptive pill’s effect on the female body and mind. While I am grateful such a medication exists, I feel as though I missed out on vital information at the time of prescription. Therefore I wasn’t prepared properly for the mental side effects I experienced and, through my research, I found out that I wasn’t alone in this.

My work represents the uncontrollable emotions this medication can bring on through a series of different head and body wearables. They highlight the different problems my peers and I encountered. This is shown through textile processes that have been changed in different ways, through the use of heat, missing threads in material, and covered up warnings, melted and manipulated away. These demonstrate how, whilst taking this medication, your body can feel like it doesn’t belong to you.
