'Schutz' is a project driven by curiosity and a desire to use design as a vessel for change. It focuses on redesigning handcuffs to be safer for the three user groups involved in the arrest process, the authority, the arrestee and any bystanders.
'Schutz' promotes handcuff safety and prevents injuries that are all too common in the arrest process. It puts forward a practical solution for arrest through the incorporation of wrist control techniques into its mechanism, which improves arrest effectiveness for police. A quick arrest is a safe arrest, and this product aims to decrease tensions between civilians and authority, through a more humane consideration and solution of the arrest process.
Improving arrest safety for civilians, while decreasing arrest times and difficulty for officers, leads to a de-escalation of tensions through the focal point of arrest. With 'Schutz', relations between police and civilian can become more positive and cooperative.
