Grace Minnock's graduate collection ‘Complete in Incompletion’ explores the constant struggle of feeling incomplete. Her goal for this project was to express that any imperfection is normal, and that it can be beautiful, valuable, and whole if you choose to accept what you cannot change. These ideas are expressed through a series of visual metaphors, combining ‘incompletions’ with ‘repairs’ to express the desire to conceal what is ‘missing’ or ‘broken’ within.
Why do we need to hide our imperfections? One prominent inspiration for her work is the Japanese art of ‘Kintsugi’, a tradition in which ceramic objects are repaired with gold, celebrating imperfection through emphasising it as a beautiful aspect of one’s life. Using sterling silver and brass, she cut, moulded, and soldered stunning jewellery that is complete despite their intentional aspects and inspirations of incompletion.
