My work explores the meaning that moments of our everyday lives have the potential to hold. I focus on portraying fragments of gestures and interactions that may otherwise go unnoticed. The process of conveying these glimpses of life is achieved as I eliminate certain aspects of an image in order to award the painted fragment with meaning. The concept of what is shown and concealed plays a key role in achieving an appreciation for the mundane encounters of day-to-day life. There is a certain intimacy and vulnerability in documenting small fragments of an image. This balance of absence and presence opens the narrative up to the viewer's interpretation.
By holding back the full context of an image each person has the opportunity to place themselves within the painting’s narrative. These fleeting moments that we might not commit to memory represent the extraordinary significance of the ordinary.
