John O’Kane is a Sligo based artist whose work is cultural, political and environmental in nature. His approach to producing art starts at the experimental stage, using a range of materials, styles, and methods to encapsulate a theme or story brought to life by extensive research, studies and also process.
Much of his sculptural work is created from recycled or found materials. He selects objects with the purpose of rekindling or unlocking memories of stories forgotten, lying dormant within. He works with a wide range of mixed media incorporating a playful approach into his practice, transforming materials to reveal a hidden history and meaning.
John’s current research project addresses climate concerns. Extensive research has enabled core issues to be highlighted such as the burning of fossil fuels and ultimately the transition between fossil fuels and more environmentally friendly alternatives.
