Throughout my life, I have seen incredible resilience and tenacity displayed by the women in my family. I began researching for my collection “CAKE” by looking at my Great-Great Grandmother, Kate Darling. Specifically, her involvement in Cumann na mBan and the fight for Irish Independence.
This collection combines features from military uniforms with textile elements which were inspired by badges, pins and sashes worn by members of both Cumann na mBan and the Suffragettes. Through the use of bright colours, textiles such as fur and feathers and chainmail garments, the collection is feminine, playful and exuberant.
My Great-Great Grandmother received no medals for her incredible bravery, so I dedicate this collection and its ebullience to her.
