Cornelia Cristea is a mixed media artist born in Romania in 1973. She grew up experimenting with drawing, embroidery, poetry and drama. After studying health and social psychology, she left her native country in 2001 to pursue a career in health management in Ireland.
In the last few years she’s been experimenting with different media including painting, drawing, collage and etching. She uses acrylic and plaster in her painting practice, combined with printmaking techniques, knives and hands to apply materials on canvas. Her paintings are washed under water in the process, which intentionally leaves a vintage, unfinished effect to her images.
Cornelia's work is a step into her past memories and her fascination for the theatrical, which seems to dominate her subject matter. Her work seeks to investigate the abundance of lyricism surrounding us.
Based in Dublin, her work was exhibited first in her home town of Beclean in the summer of 2017, at Artexpo Rome in 2019, at the NCAD visual art student's exhibitions and other private exhibitions.
Among contemporary artists of inspiration are: Oscar Murillo, Ruby Sterling and Eunice Parsons.
