The images created were inspired by the discovery of old family photographs; the photographs on the paternal side of my Sicilian heritage particularly caught my attention.

The photographs I have referenced from were all taken in Sicily in the 1920s and the images of my grandparents’ two children sparked a study of childhood. Because some of the photographs have deteriorated over time and are limited in detail, and from curiosity to see more, I took the liberty to imagine the detail of certain parts and how things may have looked at the time. This process has enabled me to further connect with and to learn more about my grandparents’ lives and their emigration to Australia in 1925.

My goal has been to find ways to combine, overlap and insert family images taken from so long ago with images from my own life in the present day, into one multi stranded image, to connect the two worlds of past and present.
