My practice presents an active response to the ecological crisis through the making of locally sourced pigments – speaking to the need to ‘notice’ and be conscious of our surroundings; paying tribute to the often discarded aspects of nature – a mapping and distilling of place, time and land.
Through gestural drawing and mark-making, the work establishes a sensorial dialogue with nature; connecting visceral movement to the alchemy of natural pigments and pointing to a circular and interdependent relationship with the environment.
In allowing the materials and processes to alchemize in free, fluid and unpredictable forms, the work illustrates moments of harmony and dissonance – reflecting the inconsistencies and irregularities characteristic of natural forms. Synthesised through botanical imagery, the work evokes the ephemeral energies, rhythms and forms found in nature.
