I have never been comfortable in large groups. However, during lockdown I craved connection. I craved the atmosphere and varied emotions generated in a crowd. That led me to reflect on the reasons why people gather to share mutual experiences, along with the associated practices and symbols, and how such gatherings influence our lives, behaviour and emotional development.

Collective events have been part of social interaction throughout history and continue to be. They are a reflection of the human condition: we are both individuals and social creatures. We grow, learn and develop personally and together with others. Memorable and defining moments take us out of ourselves and our everyday circumstances. They shape us and become rites of passage.
